How Does Dolphins Work Mutually In Getting Their Prey?

Dolphins are unique and intelligent marine animals with many amazing qualities. These creatures are energetic, playful and helpful towards other animals. They are very unique and attractive animals. Usually, these creatures use two basic techniques to catch their prey mutually. These mutual techniques are known as herding and corralling. Usually, there is no exact estimate on how much food a dolphin is likely to consume on a daily basis but according to a research, most dolphins will consume 4% – 10% of their bodyweight in food on a daily basis. A brief description about their hunting techniques and their other ways of catching their prey is given below-:

1.    Herding, the most common way- Herding is the most common technique which dolphins use to catch their prey. This technique completely depends on mutual coordination between these animals. In this, a group of dolphins surround a school of fish and pack them as tightly as possible. They don’t allow them to sneak. Afterwards, one dolphin at a time goes through the school to feed while the others don’t allow them to leave. Thus, through this technique each dolphin feeds efficiently and gets maximum amount of fish to eat.

2.    Corralling, another technique of hunting- The second technique used by dolphins to feed is corralling. This type of technique is applied when the school of fish is chased by a group of dolphins to shallow waters. At shallow level, the school of fish gets trapped between the shore and the groups of dolphins. Therefore, the group of dolphins forces them to move towards shallow level to trap them at the bottom. This way of trapping allows them to feed easily.

3.    Other ways of feeding on larger preys- Dolphins also use other ways of feeding too. In this, some species of dolphins attack large preys by hitting them with their tail. They apply brute force to hit them. Along with this, they also use loud and sonic noises to stun their prey for killing. Both these ways help a lot in finding a way of their survival.

So, this was the way by which dolphins get to their prey by working mutually. The techniques used by dolphins play big role in ensuring their healthy survival for long years. These intelligent creatures are highly skilled in getting to their prey. They can easily catch their prey by applying their sharp hunting skills.
